Acne Nodules

A severe form of acne or acne vulgaris is called a nodule. This is an inflammatory skin condition which is considered to be a severe form of Acne Vulgaris. Nodules are thick lesions found under the skin surface which is rather uncomfortable and can cause scarring.

You should never try squeezing a nodule as this only leads to major injury at the skin base. Moreover, this only makes the nodule last much longer than it would have if you had not touched it. Sometimes nodules take a long time to heal.

If you notice nodules on your face, it is better that you seek the advice and treatment from a dermatologist. This is because a nodule does cause permanent scarring even when left untreated.

Oral treatments are better for treating nodules

Though it is possible to use oral or topical treatments to treat acne nodules it is much better to use oral treatments. This is because this is a much better choice than topical treatments like Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid as these treatments take a long time to work.

One suggested oral treatment for acne nodule is Accutane as other treatments and antibodies will not affectively treat nodules. Accutane constitutes of Isotretinoin which is a retinoid, a compound of vitamin A, which is helpful in treating not only nodules but also pustules and papules.

It is not safe for pregnant women to use Accutane

It is not advised for pregnant women to use Accutane to treat nodules as it can cause serious birth defects. Accutane is usually taken as one or two pills a day, for twenty weeks. It is up to the dermatologist to decide.

However taking Accutane for 15 weeks or longer may lead to skin disorders in some patients. It is generally better to wait for a minimum of two months after completing a course, to start another course of Accutane. It is usually after the sebum secretion reduces that patients find an improvement in their acne nodule problem.

Antibiotics may be effective in treating some nodule attacks

However there are some serious side effects associated with Accutane. This is why it has to be used by people suffering form nodular acne, and where other acne treatments give no relief.

There are a few side effects of using accutane to treat your nodule treatment like joint pains, nausea, headaches and depression. And because of the side effects like suicidal thoughts and actions that are associated with Accutane, it is always better to consult with your dermatologist or family doctor before starting your treatment.

Sometimes dermatologists may suggest antibiotics to treat a minor acne attack. Though they may provide quicker results, too much of antibiotics like erythromycin, doxycycline and tetracycline only leads to the body developing a resistance to the antibiotic and perhaps, gastro intestinal problems.

Your doctor or dermatologist is the best person to decide on the treatment to use for your acne nodule attack. However just ensure that you follow instructions the doctor sets for you for a safe and efficient treatment of your nodules.
